COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. After an initial overview, we will study the history of Catholicism from its beginnings to the present day, tracing the manner in which the Catholic Church developed as a distinctive form of Christianity. We will examine the beliefs and practices that Catholics hold in common with other Christians (e.g., belief in one God, adherence to the Creed), as well as those that distinguish them from other Christians (e.g., a sacramental worldview, an institutional structure centered on the bishop of Rome, and a distinctive tradition of moral thinking). We will also give some attention to the issues and controversies that the Catholic Church faces at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
